In the Haiti post-earthquake reconstruction, "action against hunger" begins by improving the nutritional conditions of women and children

In response to the long-term malnutrition problem faced by the Haitians and the 2021 Haiti earthquake that struck its southwest region, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) and the international non-governmental organization, Action Against Hunger, have worked together to implement the Improving Nutritional Status of Households Affected by the Earthquake in South Department, Haiti project. The project kicked off on April 1, 2022, and it aims to improve the nutritional conditions of pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under five years old impacted by the earthquake in the communes of Camp Perrin and Maniche of South Department.

Haiti is located in a seismically active region and is prone to hurricanes. Recurring natural disasters and climate change have been destructive to local food production. It is estimated that one in four Haitians is facing acute food insecurity. Additionally, the 2021 Haiti earthquake not only caused serious casualties, but also damaged basic public health facilities, water supply, and sanitary infrastructure, and many people therefore have no adequate access to basic services. These shortages of healthcare services, clean water, and food, along with the threat of COVID-19, have worsened the nutritional status of vulnerable pregnant and breastfeeding women along with their children. They are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

This project will identify the nutritional status of local children and refer the acutely malnourished ones to appropriate treatment services. Furthermore, the project will also provide fortified flour, non-food items, and hygiene kits for earthquake-affected households with pregnant and breastfeeding women, and conduct awareness sessions relevant to malnutrition screening and referrals, infant and young child feeding (IYCF) and care practices, etc. With these measures, the project will further enhance its effectiveness. It is estimated that approximately 35,000 people will benefit from the project.

This project is the TaiwanICDF’s second project in response to the 2021 Haiti earthquake. For the early-recovery phase, the TaiwanICDF has been collaborating with CARE Haiti to implement the Haiti Earthquake WASH Assistance to Affected Communities and Households project since December 1, 2021. For Haiti’s road to post-recovery, the TaiwanICDF works with Action Against Hunger to provide support in the field of nutrition. This project will further reinforce the allied relationship between Taiwan and Haiti and show Taiwan’s genuine care for the earthquake-affected people.
