Project Name:Fruit and Vegetable Production and Nutrition Enhancement Project

Project Description:

This project is to improve the health of the people of our diplomatic allies Tuvalu by assisting in increasing the production of fruits and vegetables, promoting the cultivation technology of outer islands, and publicizing the concept of nutrition and healthy diet. The 4 project content are as follows: 1. Instruct the cultivation techniques of fruits and vegetables in the Hope Garden of Vaitupu outer island, assist in the demonstration of the cultivation of fruits and vegetables in the garden of Motufoua Secondary School, and provide stable vegetable and fruit for the school group meals and the islanders; 2. Enhance the cultivation of climate resilient agriculture and the technical capabilities of agricultural extension officer in the outer islands; 3. Guide the fruit and vegetable cultivation demonstration of the Friendship Garden on the Funafuti island, and establish a fruit and vegetable production area on the Funafala islet to increase the types and quantities of fruit and vegetables in the market; 4. Organize fruit and vegetable nutrition promotion, cooking and competition activities to increase interest in fruit and vegetable consumption; Short-term nutrition professionals are also dispatched to investigate the actual intake of fruits and vegetables, multiple dietary scores, nutritional knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of the beneficiary students.

Project Objectives:

The goals of the project are as follows:

1.Improved fruit and vegetable production:

(1)Obtain 920,000 fruit and vegetable seedlings.

(2)Increase production to 246 metric tons of fruit and vegetables.

2.Fruit and vegetable cultivation training and promotion:

(1)Conduct 32 workshops and train 128 people.

(2)Compile promotional materials for fruit and vegetable cultivation and compost production.

(3)Hold 12 demonstrations showcasing project outcomes.

(4)Provide 4 reports with suggestions for outer islands.

(5)Help establish 20 home gardens on Funafuti atoll and 10 home gardens on Vaitupu island.

3.Community and school diet and nutrition promotion activities:

(1)Compile educational materials for dietary nutrition.

(2)Compile a questionnaire on nutritional knowledge, attitudes, and behavior and use it to improve nutrition education programs.

(3)Hold 8 demonstrations on nutrition and cooking with a focus on fruits and vegetables.

(4)Improve nutrition among Motufoua Secondary School students. Specifically, help them consume 400 grams of produce per day so their multi-dietary score raises to 5.

4.Climate-resilient agriculture:

(1)Set up 1 demonstration area showcasing watering-saving cultivation techniques.

(2)Produce 1,020 metric tons of compost.

(3)Set up 2 demonstration areas showcasing raised gardens and potted cultivation, including 1 on the main atoll and 1 on an outer island.

(4)Install 36 rainwater collection and storage buckets on the main and outer islands.

(5)Install 1 micro-weather monitoring station.

Current Progress:

To the end of March 2024, the following activities have been completed:
1. Produce 804,385 vegetable and fruit seedlings.
2. Produce 205.41 metric tons of fruits and vegetables.
3. Produce 864.02 metric tons of compost.
4. Handle 25 workshops of cutivating vegatable and fruit.
5. Organize 37 home gardens.
6. Organize 9 nutrition promotion and cooking demostration activities.

Project Performance:

Garden on Vaitupu outer island and develop a new garden on Funafala islet and produce 70% fruit and vegetable of Funafuti and providing 70% fruit and vegetable demand of the group meals in Motufoua Secondary School.
