Patients at Tungaru Central Hospital in Kiribati eat their way back to health

Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) in the Republic of Kiribati is collaborating with the Government of Kiribati to implement the Nutrition Enhancement Project. Since 2017, the project has expanded its supply of fresh fruits and vegetables to Tungaru Central Hospital in the country. In the past two years, the project has helped patients maintain a balanced diet and improve their health condition by continuously providing fresh produce to the hospital on a weekly basis, as well as improving kitchen sanitation and providing cooking skill training for kitchen staff.

In April 2019, the nutritionists of Tungaru Central Hospital expressed their appreciation, saying that since consuming the vegetables and fruits provided by TTM, many patients have been able to speed up their recovery and can be discharged early.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), the people of Kiribati consume on average less than one serving per day of fruits and vegetables, which has led to the rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the country. In order to improve the diets of the people and decrease the prevalence of NCDs, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) and the Government of Kiribati jointly implemented the Nutrition Enhancement Project. The project combines horticulture production and nutrition education, while also supplying fruits and vegetables for school meals with recipes designed by a nutritionist. To date, the project has been highly recognized by different government departments and the people in Kiribati regarding its achievement.

In the near future, the TaiwanICDF will continue to assist Kiribati to improve the people’s diets by increasing their consumption of fruits and vegetables and promoting nutrition education through community outreach.
