Having dispatched five Mobile Medical Missions (MMM) to allies and friendly nations in the Pacific in the past three months, the TaiwanICDF is continuing its good work in the region, with two more MMMs currently providing free medical services to citizens in the Solomon Islands and Tuvalu, and another set to depart for Nauru next month.

Doctors and staff from the TaiwanICDF and Kaohsiung Medical University's Chung Ho Memorial Hospital arrived in the Solomon Islands on September 19 and, as well as providing much-needed healthcare to locals, are working on public health projects in several of the Melanesian archipelago's communities. The group will continue its work there through September 28.

Further afield in Tuvalu, professionals from the TaiwanICDF and Chung Shan Medical University Hospital in Taichung are hoping to consolidate ties and exchanges with local medical workers, helping the Polynesian islanders to bolster their healthcare system so they can better fend for themselves. The Taiwanese group arrived on September 23 and will depart on October 7. And personnel from Changhua County's Show Chwan Memorial Hospital, which is providing the third MMM with the TaiwanICDF, will be trying to achieve similar goals to their counterparts in Tuvalu, this time in the Micronesian state of Nauru.

The MMMs, which are providing free medical services to the local populations of the three countries, each of them diplomatic allies of Taiwan, are part of a project commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in June.

Over the course of the last three months, Taiwan has sent MMMs to the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Fiji, Palau and Papua New Guinea. Earlier this month, at a meeting in Palau, Marshall Islands President Kessai Note voiced his gratitude to President Chen Shui-bian, for the sterling work the MMM had carried out during its time in the Pacific island-state.
