Project Name:Improving Access to WASH and Health Services for Earthquake-affected Households in Hatay, Türkiye

Project status:Projects in Operation

Project Description:

On 6 February 2023, a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck southeastern Türkiye, affecting 11 provinces across the country. In the most severely impacted area, Hatay province, more than 20,000 people lost their lives, and approximately 770,000 people were displaced. Many affected people are now living in container cities, facing challenges of poor WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) conditions and insufficient healthcare services. In response, this project aims to improve access to WASH and healthcare services for earthquake-affected households in the Hilalkent and Emlak Konut container cities in Hatay. Overall, the project included the followings:

  1. Repair of WASH facilities in Hilalkent.
  2. Distribution of 2,250 hygiene kits to households and 450 mother-baby kits to families with newborn babies in Hilalkent and Emlak Konut Container City.
  3. Organization of at least 24 awareness-raising sessions on infectious diseases for at least 1,800 beneficiaries and service providers in total, and provision of infant care counseling for caregivers including pregnant women.

Project Objectives:

Improved access to WASH and health services for earthquake-affected households in Hatay Hilalkent and Emlak Konut Container Cities.

Executing Agency:

Association for Social Development and Aid Mobilization (ASAM)

Implementation Arrangement:

The TaiwanICDF will support the project by dispatching experts. ASAM will implement the project and liaise with local government units, communities and stakeholders.

Current Progress:

To the end of December 2024, the following activities have been carried out:

1.     Completed the recruitment of the project team and technical staff and provided Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) training to the staff.

2.     Completed the assessment of WASH facilities and identified repair needs, and repaired and maintained 58 cases, such as door lock replacements, faucet and showerhead installations, etc.

3.     Developed vulnerability criteria for the distribution of hygiene kits and mother-baby kits and completed their procurement.

4.     Organized 2 group counseling sessions for pregnant women and infant caregivers in Hilalkent, with a total of 20 participants.

5.     Organized 8 awareness-raising sessions on infectious diseases at the Migrant Health Center and schools in Hilalkent, reaching a total of 262 participants.
