TaiwanICDF assist Allies Promote Circular Economy: Public-Private Cooperation to Recycle Plastic Waste in St. Kitts and Nevis

To assist St. Kitts and Nevis in addressing the environmental issues caused by the significant waste generated by the tourism industry, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) launched a three-year "Solid Waste Management and Recycling Project" in July 2021. This project, implemented by the Taiwan Technical Mission in St. Kitts and Nevis stationed in the country in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, aims to enhance resource utilization and reduce waste generation by leveraging Taiwan's experience in waste recycling and reduction to achieve environmental sustainability.

To establish a complete recycling supply chain, TaiwanICDF not only supports the implementation of recycling management systems but also helped build two recycling plants in St. Kitts and Nevis. These plants sort, compress, and package recyclables into compressed recycling bales. So far, 99 recycling bales (approximately 20 tons) have been produced. However, as there are no waste reutilization factories in St. Kitts and Nevis, and the Caribbean region lacks comprehensive recycling mechanisms and markets, transportation costs for recyclables are higher than in other inland countries. Through the efforts of the Taiwan Technical Mission, the first batch of recyclable materials was successfully shipped out for processing in May 2024, transporting approximately 8.6 tons of plastic and metal cans recycling bales to the Dominican Republic for reprocessing.

To commemorate this milestone, the government of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Taiwan Embassy in St. Kitts and Nevis, and ICDF held an "Overseas Shipment Ceremony for Recycled Materials" on May 17, 2024. Distinguished guests included Joyelle Clarke, Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment, Climate Action, and Constituency Empowerment; Mark Brantley, Premier and Minister of Finance of Nevis Island Administration; Eric Evelyn, Deputy Premier of Nevis Island Administration; Jahnel Nisbett, Minister of Health of Nevis Island Administration; and Taiwan Ambassador Michael Lin. Minister Brantley emotionally remarked that this event marked a historic day.

The "Solid Waste Management and Recycling Project" has successfully transformed the traditional waste management methods in St. Kitts and Nevis by introducing Taiwan's long-standing plastic and metal cans recycling system. Seventy recycling collection points have been established nationwide, integrating recycling into the daily lives of the people. To date, 8,770 people have participated in recycling activities, collecting over 90 tons of plastic and metal cans waste. Additionally, the Taiwan Technical Mission in St. Kitts and Nevis encourages the public to recycle through a points redemption system, exchanging recyclables for rewards such as eco-friendly shopping bags, utensils, water bottles, and water filters. This initiative guides people to reduce single-use items, helping to achieve waste reduction and easing the burden on the country's landfills. This initiative has advanced the circular economy and sustainable development goals in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Moving forward, the Taiwan Technical Mission in St. Kitts and Nevis will further understand the operational mechanisms of the Caribbean recycling market by shipping the first batch of recycled materials. They will assist the St. Kitts and Nevis government in establishing localized recycling channels and operational mechanisms, providing practical economic benefit evaluations. This will enhance the technical cooperation between Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis, positioning Taiwan as an indispensable environmental partner.
