Project Name:Strengthen Fruit and Vegetable Production and Enhance Nutrition Balance Project

Project Description:

The Palau government aims to build upon the achievements of previous projects as the foundation for extension, continuously enhancing the involvement of the Palauan people in horticultural cultivation to increase local fruit and vegetable production, improve the accessibility of diverse local crops, and promote food and agriculture education along with healthy eating habits. By strengthening the concept of balanced nutrition among the public, it seeks to gradually reduce the incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and preserve the national human capital. Key focus areas of this project include: 1. Promote the local production of diverse fruits and vegetables in Palau to enhance the availability of fresh produce; 2. Assist in implementing Palau's dietary and nutrition policies and education to improve the nutrition of the people.

Project Objectives:

1. Assist in establishing a diverse dietary nutrition concept

(1) Hold 10 workshop of clinical dietary nutrition education and training.

(2) Design 5 sets of school nutrition meal menusOrganize 5 times of chef trainingHold 15 times of school cafeteria nutrition education.

(3) Publish 10 healthy recipes and 10 health-related columns in Palau's media.

(4) Work with Palau government to establish 1 set of nutrition assessment mechanism, collect relevant health data, and produce 1 report based on the collected health information.

(5) Observe the change patterns in Palauan healthy eating attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors, design a questionnaire and survey 1,200 people.

(6) Provide long-term consultations for community members, totaling 100 times /person a year, and organize 10 times of community nutrition and cooking demonstration

(7) Provide cooking equipment and materials for School cafeteria

2. Promote the productivity of diverse crop production in Palau

(1) Produce 130 tons of fruits and vegetables in demonstration farm to supply school lunch programs and local markets

(2) Provide guidance to 6 school farms, to deepen food and agriculture education.

(3) Establish an online consultation platform to provide guidance to 20 farming households and home gardens.

(4) Hold 10 times of eco-friendly farming training and 5 community-based farming and gardening experience workshop.

(5) Produce 750 cubic meters of compost.

(6) Establish a smart environmental monitoring system at the demonstration farm, collect agricultural meteorological data, and complete a report on agricultural meteorology and crop cultivation management recommendations.

3. Assist the relevant personnel of the Palau government units in capacity building

Provide 15 technical and policy consultations for personnel from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and the Environment, Ministry of Health and Human Services, Ministry of Education of the Palau Government.

Current Progress:

To the end of Mar. 2024, the following activities have been completed:

1. The demonstration farm has produced 8,440 kilograms of fruits and vegetables.

2. Propagated 31,128 taro seedlings.

3. Produced 39 cubic meters of compost.

4. Provided guidance to 6 school farms, 16 home gardens, and 3 commercial farms in vegetable and fruit production techniques.

5. Provided 3,226 kilograms of fruits and vegetables for school lunch programs.

6. Assisted with 1 policy consultation session for Bureau of Agriculture.

Implementation Progress:

At the end of the project, the beneficiaries of the project saw an increase of over 30% in their IDDS score.
