Climate Change and Health

This forum will be held on May 28, 2024, at 18:00 Geneva time. It is co-organized by the TaiwanICDF, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and Terre des Hommes (TdH). The Minister of Health and Welfare of Taiwan will deliver opening remarks, while a representative from the Climate Action Accelerator (CAA) in Geneva will moderate.

Ms. Michele Sumilas, the Assistant to the Administrator of the Bureau for Planning, Learning and Resource Management at USAID, will give a keynote address entitled “Climate Change and Health - How is This Major Global Crisis of Our Time Intertwined with Human Health?” Later, an official from Saint Lucia will share the country’s experience in rolling out health policies and strategies to address health issues caused by climate change. The Director of the TaiwanICDF’s Humanitarian Assistance Department, Ms. Cathy Wang, will share her organization’s experience in strengthening climate-resilient health systems alongside partner countries. Mr. Kallol Mukherji, Digital Health Manager and Deputy of Health Program at TdH, will share how climate change reduces dietary diversity and increases malnutrition in under-5 children. Mr. Roman Cordero Mojica, Coordinator of the SE-COMISCA Project Portfolio Unit, will share the results of a survey on climate change, air quality, and health in Central American Integration System (SICA) member states.

Secretary General Amb. Dr. Charles C. Li of the TaiwanICDF will deliver closing remarks.

Health Emergencies Nexus - United Against the Unknown Future Crisis

The event will be held on May 29, 2024, at 18:00 Geneva time, and it will be the first forum co-organized by the TaiwanICDF and the Central American Integration System (SICA). Dr. Alejandra Acuña, Executive Secretary of SICA, and Secretary General Li will deliver the opening remarks. Dr. Kung-Yee Liang of Taiwan’s Academia Sinica will moderate. The forum will explore preparedness for emerging infectious diseases from four perspectives: global, regional, national, and academic.

1. Global: SICA will invite a leading scholar to give a talk entitled “Health Emergencies Program – What are the future works for the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) to improve preparation for health emergencies?”

2. Regional: A SICA representative will share SICA member countries’ experiences in communicating and coordinating to combat emerging infectious diseases.

3. National: The Ministers of Health of Belize and Guatemala will share their anti-epidemic experiences and new policies.

4. Academic: Dr. Hung-Y Chiu, Distinguished Investigator and Director of the National Institutes of Health (NHRI) in Taiwan, will share his experience of using scientific evidence to guide the prevention of emerging infectious diseases.

Since 2020, a surge in health hazards caused by natural disasters and infectious diseases has highlighted the impact of climate change on health and the importance of preparedness for health emergencies. These topics will serve as the core of the TaiwanICDF’s forums.
