ICDF COLLABORATES WITH OAS TO PROMOTE WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT

The International Cooperation and Development Found (TaiwanICDF) and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belize, with support from the Organization of American States (OAS), successfully executed the Benque Viejo Women’s Economic Empowerment Vocational Training Program. The collaborators tailored this program to the needs of disadvantaged women in Benque Viejo, a western border town in Belize, providing them with four months of vocational training in beauty, baking, mixology, culinary arts, and hospitality services. As a result, local women are now better equipped to open businesses, increase their household incomes, and achieve economic independence.
On August 15th, 2023, the TaiwanICDF’s Taiwan Technical Mission in Belize held a graduation ceremony to commemorate program participants. Several distinguished attendees also attended the ceremony, such as H.E. Ambassador Lily Li-Wen Hsu, Ambassador of the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Belize; H.E. Ambassador Amalia Mai, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belize; Mr. Sergio López, Director of the OAS Belize-Guatemala Adjacency Zone Office; and Ms. Sofía Hernández, Vocational Training Coordinator of OAS. In total, 170 women passed the final skills assessment conducted by the Cayo District Vocational Training Center in Belize. They all received certificates recognizing their completion of the vocational training program.
Additionally, Ambassador Hsu delivered an address emphasizing the significance of the TaiwanICDF’s Women’s Empowerment Program. She highlighted how this collaborative effort between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belize and the OAS created an opportunity to address women’s issues and assist women in developing a diverse range of vocational skills. These talents will not only enhance the resilience of families and communities, she said, but also contribute to peace and stability in the Belize-Guatemala Adjacency Zone.
