TaiwanICDF works with Eswatini’s public and private sectors to improve vocational training

Published Wed Oct. 4, 2023

The International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) has partnered with Eswatini’s Ministry of Labour & Social Security to improve training standards for the nation’s workforce.

The TaiwanICDF, through the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) in Eswatini, is working with the ministry’s Directorate of Industrial and Vocational Training (DIVT) to improve the national vocational skills assessment system. Together, the organizations are building institutional capacity and promoting practical certifications and apprenticeships that meet employer needs. Since its inception in 2021, the Technical and Vocational Skills Certification Enhancement Project (also known as the TVSCE Project) has been widely recognized by local industries.

The popular automotive repair industry provides an excellent example of how the TVSCE Project is helping skilled employees and job seekers. Project managers and the DIVT jointly invited representatives from industry, government, and academia to collaborate on new qualification standards for the field, raising the bar on teaching quality in vocational schools. At the same time, the TVSCE Project is upgrading teaching and examination venues and purchasing training equipment for gas engines, diesel engines, and electric vehicles. Later, the project will launch continuing education and automotive mechatronics courses for industry professionals.

Bernard Devanard, technical director of the local Mercedes-Benz dealer Stucky Motors, took a hands-on approach to supporting the TVSCE Project this year. He participated in all four workshops held during the qualification standards discussions, and, touched by the TTM’s persistent efforts to improve vocational education in Eswatini, he worked with his company to support local talent development. On August 3, 2022, Stucky Motors announced a donation of engines, radiators, transmissions, horns and other automobile parts to two local schools. Additionally, the company encouraged its employees to participate in TVSCE Project training courses to improve their automotive repair skills.

Going forward, the Taiwan Technical Mission will continue playing the role of public-private sector cooperation platform, encouraging local entrepreneurs to join in building a better vocational education environment. Together with government officials and local businesses, the TTM will pursue economic development in Eswatini.
