Published Wed Oct. 4, 2023

On September 5, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) held an orientation at National Sun Yat-sen University to welcome the 2023 International Higher Education Scholarship Program recipients.

This year, 177 international students from 33 countries participated in the event, along with several ambassadors from Taiwan’s allies.Mr. Stephen J. H. Lee, Deputy Secretary General of the TaiwanICDF, encouraged all students to develop perseverance and an appreciation for the good they encounter in their daily lives. Mr. Lee also invited them to enjoy Taiwan with a spirit of exploration and adventure. Amb. Andrea Bowman from St. Vincent and the Grenadines expressed her gratitude to the TaiwanICDF for providing scholarships to young talents on behalf of the diplomatic corps. She urged students to study hard and cherish their scholarships.

The TaiwanICDF also invited lecturers to help acclimate students to life in Taiwan. They shared advice on the legal and academic aspects of their new surroundings, as well as provided guidance on day-to-day living in Taiwan. Graduates and senior students from the scholarship program also shared their experiences with the incoming freshmen to further help them adapt to their new lives as international students.

The TaiwanICDF International Higher Education Scholarship Program was launched in 1998 to cultivate talent for economic and social development. It helps Taiwan’s allied and partner nations outlined in the New Southbound Policy as well as others from Africa, Eastern Europe, and other regions. The scholarship partners with 23 Taiwanese universities and offers awards for 35 programs covering agriculture, information and communication technology, science and engineering, public health, and business management.

To date, 2,993 students from 67 countries have received scholarships from the TaiwanICDF. Graduates have gone on to serve as leaders, researchers and teachers in their home countries, which not only builds ground-level bilateral relations with Taiwan but also serves as a model for international development cooperation.
