TaiwanICDF collaborates with People in Need to assist nano- and micro-enterprises in Turkiye’s earthquake-affected areas with resuming operations and restoring community life

In February 2023, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck  11 provinces in southeastern Turkiye. Over 9.1 million people were directly impacted by the quake and its aftershocks, and the death toll exceeded 50,000. The disaster severely damaged Turkiye’s economic activities as well as the livelihoods of its people. Therefore, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) collaborated with a Czech-based INGO, People in Need (PIN), to implement Early Recovery Project for Local Enterprises Affected by Earthquake in Turkiye, a humanitarian assistance project, to support people in the affected regions as they recover and rebuild their lives. The project was officially launched on July 1, 2023, with the aim of helping preexisting local nano- and micro-enterprises resume and accelerate their operations and providing services on the reconstruction process.

Losses caused by the disaster exceeded US$100 billion, representing almost 9% of Turkiye’s projected gross domestic product (GDP) for 2023. Additionally, according to the International Labour Organization (ILO), the afftected people’s income losses estimated at 4,351 Turkish Lira (US$230.6) per capita/month on average. In other words, the tremors had an enormous impact on livelihoods. In response, at least 100 nano- and micro-enterprises in the Adıyaman, Kahramanmaraş, and Gaziantep provinces will be provided cash assistance through this project to restart operations. They will also receive tailor-made advisory support to strengthen operational management and core capacities. These activities are expected to become  an economic drive  in the earthquake-affected areas, reestablishing critical services for regional reconstruction and community life. Supported entrepreneurs may include carpenters, electricians, plumbers, barbers, tailors, and others.

The project emphasizes Turkiye’s reconstruction and is a continuation of Taiwan’s multi-faceted approach to assisting the nation since the early stages of the emergency. It also reinforces Taiwan’s image as a humanitarian aid provider. The TaiwanICDF will dispatch an expert to support project implementation, strengthening Taiwan’s international participation and demonstrating its soft power, further raising the visibility of Taiwan in Turkiye.
