Taiwan’s Phalaenopsis Orchids: An Increasingly Popular Mother’s Day Gift in Paraguay
To celebrate Mother’s Day, the Taiwan Technical Mission of the International Cooperation and Development Foundation (TaiwanICDF) in Paraguay organized a world-class orchid exhibition. The event took place May 12-13 at the San Lorenzo Orchid Exhibition and Sales Center (Centro de Exposición y Venta de Orquídeas), situated in a suburban region of Asuncion, the nation’s capital. Guided by Taiwanese horticulture experts, the exhibition showcased remarkable achievements in orchid cultivation and featured species from iconic genera like Phalaenopsis, Oncidium, and Cattley, among others. The event attracted a large crowd and significant demand from customers.
Floricultura del Paraguay S.A., an orchid producer under the technical mission’s guidance, also organized a promotional event for Mother’s Day. The business opened its greenhouse to the public during a two-day exhibition, which was held at its production base near the Asuncion Silvio Pettirossi International Airport. Floricultura del Paraguay S.A. is the first local enterprise to commercialize Phalaenopsis orchids, and all of its plants come from exceptional Taiwanese breeds. The company provides local markets with high-quality flowering plants through its collaboration with the technical mission, contributing to the prosperity and development of Paraguay’s orchid industry.
In contrast with Taiwanese people, who associate Mother’s Day with carnations, Paraguayans have a distinct affinity for elegant Phalaenopsis orchids. In the past, Paraguay relied heavily on imports from Brazil due to a lack of local investment in orchid production. Since 2015, the technical mission has collaborated with the Paraguayan government on several projects, including the Orchid Industry Development and Tissue Culture Plantlet Propagation Project, the Project to Strengthen Capacity for Commercial Production of Orchids, and the Project to Strengthen Capacity for Commercial Production and Operation of Orchids. These initiatives established a local orchid production chain and expanded local markets. As a result, the technical mission and Taiwan’s lovely orchids have become deeply embedded in Paraguay society.
