TaiwanICDF uses Taiwan’s technological advantages to assist St. Vincent in strengthening urban security

On March 10, the TaiwanICDF launched the three-year “Enhancing Public Safety with Intelligent Video Analytics Project” in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Ambassador Peter Sha-Li Lan of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and St. Vincent Minister of Finance the Hon. Camillo Gonsalves signed the project implementation agreement. The project sees the TaiwanICDF leveraging Taiwan’s advantages in smart technology to help St. Vincent achieve a number of goals, such as: improving urban governance capabilities, strengthening security hotspot control with real-time image surveillance, minimizing investigation times via training of private sector personnel, and improving general efficiency and sustainability in information systems.

The project introduces both Taiwanese hardware and software to St. Vincent. For example, the TaiwanICDF is helping St. Vincent police monitor important blocks in real-time by installing video surveillance equipment in crowded areas. At the same time, the organization is deploying an automatic license plate recognition system to help law enforcement locate and track targeted vehicles. These technologies help St. Vincent improve law enforcement efficiency. The project’s first phase will begin implementation on the nation’s main island, St. Vincent, before expanding to the two largest outlying islands of Bequia and Union Island.

St. Vincent is a Caribbean nation with a tourism-based economy, and its government is eager to revitalize the industry following the COVID-19 pandemic. To accomplish this, officials are prioritizing urban safety initiatives. By adopting advanced information and communication technologies and training personnel in their use, the nation is cultivating digital governance capabilities that improve administrative services and enable the development of smart cities.

Now that the world is transitioning into a post-pandemic stage, foreign assistance projects must consider shifting development needs. Accordingly, the TaiwanICDF will continue providing timely aid that addresses the most pressing challenges among Taiwan’s allies. To do so, the TaiwanICDF will implement projects that share Taiwan’s superior information and communication technology, facilitate improved security and digital transformation, and expand cooperative business opportunities for Taiwanese companies.
