Project Name:Rice Production Enhancement Project in Artibonite Valley, Haiti

Project Description:

The project is to continue the achievements of the "National Rice Seed Production Enhancement Project in Artibonite Valley, Haiti", with the intention to assist the food production, continue to produce seeds in Artibonite and stabilize the national rice production to ensure food security. Project implementation will include: 1. Stabilize the production of quality seed and to guarantee yield and the number of beneficiary farmers; 2. Execute rice seed regeneration operations in rice growing areas; 3. Strengthen the Operational Functions of Farmers' Organizations; 4. Assist the Cooperative partner in the rectification and repair of the water conservancy system in the rice growing areas; 5. Strengthen Cooperative partners' agricultural mechanization and work efficiency; 6. Assist in training to improve farmers' knowledge.

Project Objectives:

1. Guide in the production of 2,500 tons of variety TCS10 rice and 1,000 tons of rice grain.
2. Guide the implementation of the seed inspection and quality certification system in the Artibonite Valley, train 12 field inspectors and 6 laboratory technicians.
3. Assist farmers' organizations in organizing and operating the rice harvesting center and 2 agricultural machinery repair stations.
4. Improve the planting technology, material technical support and seed production process of farmers. Training 240 farmers and organizing 2 field cultivation observation sessions.
5. Build and register the field geographic information map and cultivation information for a total of 425 hectares to facilitate the accessibility of real-time land data and promote the diversified application of smart agricultural information.

Current Progress:

To the end of December 2023, the following activities have been completed:

1.Achieved an annual rice seed production of 2,203.26 metric tons, comprising 0.9 metric tons of breeder seed, 45.36 metric tons of foundation seed, and 2,157 metric tons of quality seed; additionally, achieved annual rice grain production of 822.22 metric tons.

2.Trained rice seed laboratory professionals, including 12 field inspectors and 6 laboratory inspectors.

3.Organized 10 rice cultivation technique training sessions for a total of 240 participants.

4.Advised 5 multiservice centers on rice seed processing and storage operations.

5.Registered cultivation information for 425 hectares in the agricultural production system.

6.Performed maintenance for 25 power tillers and 5 winnowing machines, as well as other harvesting and land preparation equipment.

7.Offered operational guidance for 2 agricultural machinery repair stations.

Projected Benefits:

Stabilize the rice seed production chain in the Artibonite Valley. At the end of the project, achieve an annual yield of quality seed of 2,500 tons and 1,000 tons of rice grain.
