Project Name:Rice Production Enhancement Project in North/North-East, Haiti

Project Description:

The project is to continue the achievements of the "National Rice Seed Production Enhancement Project in North/North-East, Haiti", with the intention to stabilize national rice production of Haiti and to improve food security as a priority. Project implementation will include: 1. Introduce the regional seed banks and mentor to produce commercial seeds; 2. Strengthen the operation ability of farmers' organizations to support the community seed bank to produce commercial seeds and provide regional agricultural services; 3. Build capacity of seed inspection technicians and establish the grading standards to improve regional seed quality; 4. Guide the operation of the multi-service center, seed purchasing and storage, and training technicians in the operation and maintenance of agricultural equipment to improve the ability of regional seed post-harvest process; 5. Assist in the training of farmers' knowledge and ability in the rice production area.

Project Objectives:

1. Establish a community seed bank system to produce seeds of Xaragua variety with an annual yield goal of 300 tons of quality rice seed and 900 tons of grain.
2. Guide 20 farmers’ organizations to establish multi-service center to support regional seed bank and offer agricultural services to the region.
3. Establish 1 seed laboratory in the north; guide the community seed banks to analyze and control seed quality and training of 6 inspection technicians and 2 laboratory technicians.
4. Improve the planting technology, material technical support and seed production process of farmers. Training 240 farmers and organizing 2 field cultivation observation sessions.
5. Build and register the field geographic information map and cultivation information for a total of 160 hectares to facilitate the accessibility of real-time land data and promote the diversified application of smart agricultural information.

Current Progress:

To the end of March 2024, the following activities have been completed:

1.Completed land preparation on 0.1 hectares of breeder seed, 2 hectares of foundation seed, 42.81 hectares of certified seed and 106.09 hectares of paddy fields during the first season of 2024.

2.Conducted transplanting on 0.1 hectares of breeder seed, 2 hectares of foundation seed, 21.64 hectares of certified seed and 41.54 hectares of paddy fields during the first season of 2024.

3.Established 4 small-scale rice multiservice centers and provided operational guidance.

4.Coached 10 farmer associations on agricultural material procurement, material lending, post-harvest rice seed processing, and rice milling.

5.Registered cultivation information for 41.55 hectares in the agricultural production system.

6. Registered cultivation information for 160 hectares in the agricultural production system.

Projected Benefits:

Stabilize the rice seed production chain in the northern region of Haiti. At the end of the project, achieve an annual yield of quality seed of 300 tons and 900 tons of rice grain.
