Project Name:Enhancing the efficiency of production-distribution supply chain in fruit and vegetable sector in St. Lucia (The second phase)

Project Description:

TaiwanICDF has cooperated with the government of Saint Lucia to implement the project of “Enhancing the efficiency of production-distribution supply chain in fruit and vegetable sector” since 2018. The agricultural information system and production and marketing adjustment mechanism have been established to effectively assist in the development of the country’s agriculture. The government of the country hopes that the use of this agricultural technology will strengthen the country’s agricultural production and improve the income of farmers, as well as build the resilience of the agricultural sector to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Project Objectives:

In order to achieve sustainable agriculture goals, the main contents of this plan include:

1. Promote diversified production.

2. Establish a high-efficiency production model.

3. Strengthen the local agricultural product sales/marketing mechanism and develop the value-added agricultural products.

Executing Agency:

Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, and Food Security and Taiwan Technical Mission in St. Lucia.

Current Progress:

By the end of September, 2023, there are milestones that have been achieved as follows:

1. Held 14 field workshops with topics including passion fruit and okra cultivation, dragon fruit cultivation, plantain cultivation, pest management, and farm management.

2. Guided Ti Riviere farmers in establishing an irrigation committee, distributed 56 rolls of drip line to 43 farmers, and provided technical guidance to 25 farmers on the installation of drip irrigation pipes. 

3. Held 4 machinery training workshops for 45 trainees and provided land preparation services 28 times.

4. Held 9 composting training workshops for 50 trainees and set up 1 small compost house. 

5. Held 7 input sales.

6. Held 8 production and sales training courses for 424 trainees, with topics including GAP, crop management, post-harvest handling, and marketing.

6. Established the iFarm agricultural information system for collecting agricultural production data; the system has accumulated 5,048 registered farmers and provides visual yield map data to the Ministry of Agriculture.

7. Held 10 farmers’ markets and assisted the St. Lucia Marketing Board (SLMB) with setting up a new retail store in Central Market. 

8. Held 8 precision chemical analysis training courses for the National Agricultural Diagnostic Facility (NADF).

9. Held 16 HACCP and pesticide residue testing training courses.

10. Held 10 agriprocessing training courses, with topics including soap-making, fruit dehydration, and jam canning.
