TaiwanICDF Workshop Promotes Tilapia Industry in Latin America and the Caribbean

A Workshop on Tilapia Culture was recently held in Comayagua, Honduras from March 15 to 25, 2011. Attended by 16 participants from eight countries, the workshop was the first on-the-ground training from the TaiwanICDF to facilitate the transfer of aquaculture projects from its technical missions in Latin America and the Caribbean. Ambassador John Lai of the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Honduras and Jacobo Regalado, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Honduras, were both in attendance to address participants at the opening ceremony and to show their support and appreciation for the regional training program.

Since tilapia farming is an important form of aquaculture in Latin America and the Caribbean, the TaiwanICDF operates a number of aquaculture projects in support of the industry from its technical missions throughout the region. In order to boost the development of the aquaculture sector and help tilapia producers to better utilize the facilities and materials available to them, the TaiwanICDF conducted this workshop with a focus on the three most-needed areas of expertise: breeding technology, including tilapia fingerling production, species identification, all-male tilapia fry production, and genetic improvement; culture project planning and management skills; and marketing and formation of farmers’ organizations. This curriculum was designed to upgrade the capacity of extension officers and producers, so that they are capable of contributing to the sustainable development of the tilapia culture industry in their own country.

The workshop included indoor lectures and field practice, which equipped participants with important knowledge and the hands-on technical skills required for the development of the tilapia culture industry. The design and content of the course were highly appreciated by participants, who all gave positive feedback. Following the completion of a successful workshop, the TaiwanICDF plans to conduct a follow-up training program within the next year, to provide further technical assistance promoting the tilapia culture industry in Latin America and the Caribbean.
