TaiwanICDF and National Taiwan Normal University Cooperate on One-To-One Overseas Online Mandarin Courses

The TaiwanICDF has collaborated with the Department of Chinese as a Second Language at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) since this July, uniting teaching resources of both sides to benefit students in partner countries and expand the diversity of Mandarin learning approaches. Despite the pandemic, the TaiwanICDF enables learning to continue by utilizing remote technology to promote high-quality Mandarin teaching.

Even with the global spread of COVID-19, there is still high demand and enthusiasm for Mandarin learning. To increase Taiwan’s Mandarin teaching capacity and engage domestic teachers in international cooperation, the TaiwanICDF has partnered with NTNU on a distance teaching internship program. The program has successfully paired 55 NTNU students with 64 elementary Mandarin learners from partner countries Belize, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Christopher and Nevis, Nicaragua, Paraguay, and Turkey, to start one-to-one online weekly courses.

Furthermore, NTNU has pledged to begin a certified online teaching practice course starting this academic year to develop the distance teaching skills of students. Once the pandemic slows down, the TaiwanICDF will select outstanding students for the short-term overseas internships to enhance professional Mandarin teaching.

The TaiwanICDF started the Overseas Professional Mandarin Teaching Project in 2014 to introduce Taiwan’s culture and society to partner countries, promoting traditional Chinese characters and enhancing cultural communication. In 2021, the TaiwanICDF has dispatched 17 qualified Mandarin teachers to Nicaragua, Paraguay, Honduras, Belize, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Christopher and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Haiti, Palau, Turkey, Jordan, and other countries.
