TaiwanICDF Cooperates with Terre des hommes Foundation to Assist India in Improving Capacity to Fight COVID-19 through Digital Technology

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic in India, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) is continuing to cooperate with Swiss-based international non-governmental organization, Terre des hommes Foundation (Tdh), to implement the Digital Health Innovation for COVID-19 Response in India (Phase 2) project, which officially started on July 16, 2021. This second phase project will focus on promoting the digital applications developed under the first phase in more targeted primary healthcare (PHC) facilities in Ranchi District of Jharkhand State, and therefore assist the healthcare workers to deliver quality services and comply with infection prevention and control (IPC) standards to respond to COVID-19.

The first phase project was completed at the end of May 2021. It successfully developed mobile applications for digitized screening and triage, healthcare worker training and monitoring for COVID-19 response, and a chatbot to provide information on COVID-19 FAQs, with the applications adopted by 75 PHC facilities in Ranchi. However, India still faces critical challenges posed by the pandemic, and the healthcare system of Jharkhand State remains vulnerable. Therefore, the TaiwanICDF and Tdh will continue collaborating to implement the second phase project in Ranchi, Jharkhand. Based on the foundation built during the first phase, the second phase will expand the scale of beneficiary PHC facilities. The project will target 120 PHC facilities, including the original 75 from phase one, and the healthcare workers will benefit from utilizing the digital applications. Furthermore, as vaccines are crucial in the global fight against COVID-19, a vaccine delivery feature will be incorporated in the screening and triage app. With this supplementary function, healthcare workers can efficiently execute and manage the government’s COVID-19 vaccination program. This second phase project is estimated to reach around 348,000 direct and indirect beneficiaries, including healthcare workers and the public.

In addition, the TaiwanICDF will invite Taiwan’s IT experts to work with Tdh to review and provide support and input to optimize the new vaccine delivery function in the app. By strengthening Taiwan’s participation in this project and sharing our country's comparative advantages, we will deepen collaboration between Taiwan and India, and also reinforce the image of Taiwan as a humanitarian aid provider.
