TaiwanICDF and USAID cooperate for the first time to host the online training on Health Workforce Management and Data Systems: A Focus on Pacific Island Countries and Health System Resilience

The International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have cooperated for the first time to host the online training on Health Workforce Management and Data Systems: A Focus on Pacific Island Countries and Health System Resilience. The training was officially launched on July 13, 2021 at 09:00 Taipei Time, with a total of 40 participants from 10 countries.

Taiwan and the United States both have been dedicated to international development cooperation affairs for over 60 years. Working together this time, the TaiwanICDF and USAID will use this online training course to increase the participants’ capacity of health human workforce management and planning in the Pacific Island countries.

COVID-19 continues to devastate countries globally, and has severely impacted public health systems all over the world. Human resources for health also face many challenges, and obtaining effective information in a timely manner for management is crucial for the pandemic crisis. Given the incomplete data collection and application of health workforce management in Pacific Island countries, this training aims to address the importance of health workforce management and to increase participants’ understanding of health human resources for health priorities, data and systems through lectures and experience exchanges. These measures prepare them to effectively manage health workforces in the follow-up to achieve national health goals and respond to threats that arise in the future.

The online training will be divided into two sessions, with the first session held today and the second session held on July 20, 2021. Today’s training opened with remarks by TaiwanICDF Deputy Secretary General Dr. Pai-Po Lee and USAID Acting Deputy Mission Director to the Philippines, Pacific, and Mongolia Marisol Perez. They both expressed their affirmation of the cooperation between the two organizations, and also hoped that the participants would gain a wealth of knowledge. Following the opening remarks, Dr. Hung-Yi Chiou, Distinguished Investigator and Director of Institute of Population Health Sciences at Taiwan’s National Health Research Institutes, shared the country’s experience on the topic of “Assessing the Demands and Supplies of Taiwan's Health Workforce.” Speakers from USAID’s HRH2030 Program/Chemonics International included Rachel Deussom, Global Technical Director; Leah McManus, Technical Advisor and Indonesia Project Lead; and Amy Sedig, Senior Project Manager, and they covered issues such as how to view and use health human resource information.

In the field of public health and medicine, the TaiwanICDF has long served as a platform for international cooperation and actively cooperates with the public and private sectors on various topics, including maternal and infant health care, chronic disease prevention, health information and management system and public health emergency response. We will continue to use the professional resources from Taiwan’s medical and relevant professional institutions to plan and implement public health and medicine projects in our partner countries, thereby assisting them to strengthen their medical care and public health systems.
