Project Description：

This project cooperates with the Palau Bureau of Agriculture to increase the diversity and production of livestock to comply with the country’s food security policy. It is planned to continue the existing achievements of the previous Animal Production Project (APP), to reconstruct animal houses, increase production scale to expand project's execution benefits. In terms of pigs, the breeding scale of the piglet production will be increased year by year to 450 piglets per year, the project will continue to purify local pig breeds and promote to farmers so as to create employment opportunities of the country and increase farmers’ profits in raising pigs; in terms of chickens, a commercial layer breeding model will be established to produce 210,000 eggs to provide to school so as to increase the nutrition in lunch of school children. the project is to produce 2,000 broilers every year to promote food security to all states in the country; in addition, the project will establish a meat duck flock, and investigate growth characteristics and establish artificial breeding Technology to enhance the diversity of domestic animal protein production. The main contents of this project include: 1. Pig and feed production and promotion; 2. layer, broiler and feed production and promotion; 3 Hygienic slaughtering assistance and 4. Duck production test, etc.

Project Objectives：

1. Expand 2 pig houses and 1 wastewater treatment facility, which can treat about 200 kg of solid manure and 4 metric tons of wastewater per day.
2. Increase the number of piglets supplied year by year. A total of 1,750 quality piglets will be produced for promotion to farmers, and a total of 137 metric tons of pork will be produced in 5 years.
3. A total of 350 metric tons of pig feed will be promoted to farmers for pig feeding in 5 years.
4. Hold 10 trainings on pig feeding and management. And train 6 skilled personnel for pig raising in BOA.
5. Assist hygienic slaughtering and slaughter 1,310 heads of pigs and edit a hygienic slaughter operation manual.
6. Expand 2 poultry houses.
7. produce 10,000 broiler chicks and promoted to farmers in 5 years to produce fresh and high-quality chicken. This Includes the assistance of low-income families with raising broilers in 13 states of Palau, 5 households each year, each with 24 broilers, a total 195 households will be helped in the first 3 years of the project
8. Establish a high-yielding rate model (Rhode Island Red) and keep the scale of 800 layers to produce a total of 832,000 eggs in 5 years.
9. A total of 350 tons of poultry feed will be produced and promoted to farmers in 5 years.
10. Hold 10 trainings on chicken feeding and management. And train 6 skilled personnel for chicken raising in BOA.
11. Assist feed milling and production and edit a feed plant operation manual.
12. Introduce meat ducks and keep the scale of 100 breeding flock, and investigate growth, carcass and reproductive performance respectively and build up its artificial reproductive technology.

Current Progress：

To the end of Dec. 2023, the following activities have been completed:

Completion and official inauguration of new animal houses.

Continue to carry out the capacity building of BOA personnel, including pig and chicken feeding & management, slaughterhouse and feed plant operation and maintenance, etc.

Livestock progress:

1. Propagated 1,173 piglets.

2. Total production of pig feed reaching 300.64 metric tons.

3. Conducted 7 workshops on pig house management.

4. The number of sanitary pig slaughter in total was 770 heads.

Poultry progress:

1. Conducted 8 seminars on chicken farming and slaughter training.

2. Total number of chicks extended was 10,320 and assist 155 low-income families with raising broilers.

3. Produced a total of 555,625 chicken eggs.

4. Produced a total of 331.5 metric tons of chicken feed.

5. Introduce meat ducks and keep the scale of 332 breeding flock.

Project Performance：Local pork and eggs production will reach 14% and 15% of domestic demand respectively.
