Project Description：

The proposed second phase of PIEP, referred to as PIEP II, will build on the successes of the first phase to further enhance the pig industry supply chain in Eswatini. The main components of PIEP II include: 1. Improving the pig breeding system at Mpisi Pig Breeding Station by supplying pure line breeding pigs to potential farmers to increase the supply of high­quality hybrid gilts, thus increasing the proportion of farmers with quality breeding pigs; 2. Conducting national training on breeding management, nutrition, artificial insemination and other techniques aimed at improving farmers' production efficiency; 3. Establishing a national pig identification and traceability system to link sources of pigs with registered abattoirs for hygienic pig slaughter; and 4. Facilitating market linkages by enabling the signing of production and/or marketing contracts between farmers and pork wholesalers, and establishing a frozen carcass stacking lease mechanism to regulate the Eswatini pork market demand and stabilize marketing channels affecting pork supply and demand.

Project Objectives：Improve the operating environment of the pig industry in Eswatini; increase farmers' productivity and income by 15 percent from the 2020 benchmark by the end of the project.

Current Progress：

By the end of March 2024, the following activities have been implemented:

1.Select 13 breeding stock of forth generation of pure Landrace, 9 of pure Large White and 6 of pure Duroc.

2.Maintain the 120 purebred pigs populations at Mpisi pig breeding station.

3.Produce and extent 124 two-crossbred gilts to farmers in 2024, 1,484 two-crossbred gilts produce in total.Promote purebred breeding sows to medium and large-scale pig farmers, and assist them mating 12 sows, totally 134 sows mated and 530 gilts selected.

4.Promote the pigbase system, totally 475 farmers were registered. 

5.Asist 10 pig farmers in signing purchase contracts with pork wholesalers. They sold 2,281 pigs and produced about 208 ton pork.

6.Conduct 59 workshops for farmers on piggery management, totally 1,619 participants.

7.Conduct 1 workshop for pig hygienic slaughter, totally 28 participants related to abattoir.

8.Conduct 2 workshop of meat inspection, totally 86 participants related to meat inspector.
