The TaiwanICDF Cooperates with Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Continuing to Helps St. Kitts and Nevis Fight against Metabolic Diseases
The Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Metabolic Disease, implemented by the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) in collaboration with Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan and the Ministry of Health in St. Kitts and Nevis, officially kicked off on 7 July this year.
The project will be conducted based on the results of the last project, the Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Kidney Disease, and integrate with The Chronic Care Model recommended by WHO and Taiwan’s profound experiences in preventing metabolic diseases. This project will strengthen the metabolic disease care system through assisting medical facilities and personnel in building up early screening capabilities, case management, and shared care between doctors, nurses, and dietitians.
In the past three years, the Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Kidney Disease has built integrated care strategies of chronic kidney diseases, strengthened abilities of health personnel, and increased self-awareness and knowledge of self-care at the community level. The first epidemiological survey in St. Kitts and Nevis shows that among 3,739 patients, 55 percent have diabetes, and 77 percent have hypertension. Patients with diabetes and hypertension have higher risk to develop chronic kidney diseases, which indicates the importance of prevention and control of metabolic diseases.
The TaiwanICDF has long served as a platform for international cooperation and actively cooperates with the public and private sectors on various topics, including maternal and infant health care, chronic disease prevention, and health information and management systems. The TaiwanICDF will continue to use professional resources from Taiwan’s medical institutions to plan and implement public health and medicine projects in our partner countries, thereby assisting them to strengthen their medical care and public health systems.
