The Republic of Nauru, our Pacific ally, opened a new prison at the end of 2019. In cooperation with H.E. President Aingimea, Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) is establishing an agricultural and livestock farm at the RON Prison. By providing a series of agri-skill training programs for the incarcerated and teaching them food production, the food self-sufficiency ratio could reach 80 percent. Additionally, the practical training of crop and livestock production gives the incarcerated skills they can use after their release.

The farm, designed by the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) in Nauru, has a circular economy and zero-waste approach. It includes a piggery, chicken farm, compost house, rainwater collection system, sewage system, and vegetable garden, and is expected to be completed in the third quarter of this year. In addition, TTM plans to provide self-raised chicks (TaiwaNauru Chicken), piglets, and vegetables seedlings for the training programs. The team will also train the chef of the prison in cooking “circular” recipes, and provide education on diet diversity to improve the health status of the incarcerated.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the food supply chain in the South Pacific region and climate change has severely impacted food production, leading to a critical need to improve food security in Nauru. With high crime and unemployment rates challenging the development of the country, this project is not only able to supply self-sufficient food for the incarcerated, but also increase their employment rate once they are released.
