After signing a memorandum of cooperation on May 20, 2019, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) and the World Farmers' Organization (WFO) co-organized the Caribbean Regional Workshop in St. Kitts and Nevis on August 14-16, 2019.The workshop gathered farmers from all over the Caribbean region to share and exchange ideas on solutions and best practices to climate change, to identify key actions and strategies and give voice to farmers in the global discussion on climate change.

This event is the first regional workshop of the WFO Farmers Driven Climate Change Agenda. Nearly 60 farmers from St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent, St Lucia, Belize, Haiti and Jamaica participated in the workshop. Minister Eugene Hamilton of Agriculture and Health of St. Kitts and Nevis, Ambassador Tom Lee of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to St. Kitts and Nevis, Representative in the Eastern Caribbean States with IICA, Gregg Rawlins, and the representatives of Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security of CGIAR in Latin America also joined the workshop to facilitate the discussion between farmers, governments and regional agricultural organizations.

The workshop was chaired by Professor Li-Fen Lei, director of the board of theTaiwanICDF, TaiwanICDF Deputy Secretary General Alex L. J. Shyy and WFO Vice-President Dave Velde. Professor Lei shared the strategies and specific practices of Taiwanese farmers in response to climate change. Taiwan Technical Mission in St. Kitts and Nevis introduced the initial results of the St. Kitts and Nevis Enhancing Agricultural Adaptive Capacity to Climate Variability Project in crop disaster prevention test and integrated meteorological information. Deputy Secretary General Shyy proposed four suggestions — building partnerships, introducing technology applications, creating a circular economy and strengthening farmers organizations – in response to questions raised by the farmers and to consolidate consensus.

The WFO will present the conclusions of this workshop at the Global Climate Summit to be held in September this year, and the 25th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change to be held in December. (COP25). This will show the achievements of Taiwan’s technical cooperation projects and highlight Taiwan’s active efforts in tackling the challenges of climate change.
