National Broadband Plan in Belize cited as an example supporting trade in Aid for Trade at a Glance 2019

The latest Aid for Trade at a Glance 2019 is now available on the websites of World Trade Organization (WTO) and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)! The TaiwanICDF's National Broadband Plan in Belize was selected as an example in terms of “building trade-related infrastructure-- supporting ICT” to be shared with development partners over the world.

The project is financed by the TaiwanICDF to support Belize Telemedia Limited (Digi) to replace its fixed infrastructure with fiber-optic network nationwide, so as to increase internet speeds, carrying capacity and coverage, and provide Belizean people with wider access to faster, affordable and quality internet services.

ICT is widely recognized as a crucial player in trade development. It promotes innovation and boosts efficiency as existing trade activities and services become cheaper, quicker and more convenient. ICT also increases inclusion as people gain access to services that were previously out of reach. This broadband infrastructure project will serve as a foundation for Belizean businesses and government to better adopt ICT techniques/tools in the effort to development trade, so as to enhance their competitiveness.

A press conference was held by Digi in May to highlight the major milestones of the project: Fiber connection now available countrywide!! More than 20,000 homes/businesses in major cities, towns and villages across the country are enjoying the high-speed internet and connecting without boundaries, thanks to the optic fiber financed by the TaiwanICDF. The Deputy Counselor of ROC (Taiwan) Embassy Mr. Zao-Wei Yang and the leader of Taiwan Technical Mission Mr. Diego Tsai also attended the event to witness and celebrate these achievements.

Aid for Trade at a Glance 2019 is a co-publication of the WTO and OECD. The analysis is based on the views of 133 respondents, including developing countries, donors and regional organizations, who participated in the 2019 Aid for Trade monitoring and evaluation exercise. For more information:
