Project Name:Project for the Strengthening of Marketing Capacity in Family Farming (Guatemala)

Project Description:

In cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food of Guatemala (MAGA), this project has the purpose of strengthening the commercial development of 30 farmers’ organizations, which approximately involves 1,000 farmers engaged in family farming. The main outputs are: 1. Provide technical assistance for agricultural products to meet the target market requirements. 2. Provide capacity building on joint marketing and logistics arrangements. 3. Enhance access to crop market information for farmers.

Project Objectives:

1. Establish a traceability platform for the farmers’ organizations benefiting from the Project, and hold 10 activities with exporters and MAGA to enhance awareness and publicity regarding the traceability issue.
2. Provide 24 consultancies per year for each farmers’ organization on pest control, soil nutrition and fertilizer management and post-harvest techniques.
3. Motivate local resources to support 30 distribution centers so that they obtain the sanitary license required for operations.
4. Assist 30 farmers’ organizations to formulate their marketing plan in accordance with their level of development.
5. Establish a digital platform for farmers and buyers to fulfill the marketing gap.

Current Progress:

To the end of December 2021, the following activities have been completed:
1. Established the National Agricultural Product Traceability platform in Guatemala.Conducted 30 promotional activities on agricultural traceability.
2. Provide 165 consultancies per year for each farmers’ organization on pest control, soil nutrition and fertilizer management and post-harvest techniques.
3. Conducted 29 field training courses for 800 farmers.
4. Improved the Freight yard facilities for 30 farmer organizations to meet the sanitary standards.
5. Provide training course of post-harvest processing, quality control, Barista skills , storage and marketing for 10 coffee production and marketing groups. Assisted 31 farmer organizations to perform joint distribution and marketing functions.
6. Hosting the Coffee Expo and Online Chocolate Carnival, a total of 46 production organizations benefited from participating in the exhibition.
7. Established a price information collection platform for the five major export crops and improve the function of MAGA APP V3.0.
8. Cooperated with Ministry of Agriculture, National Weather Service and International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) in Guatemala to enhance climate data collection of agriculture.
