Project Name:National Rice Seed Production Enhancement Project in North/North-East, Haiti

Project Description:

In accordance with the policy of Haiti’s President Jovenel Moïse to increase food security and to expand the impact of the Rice Seed Production Capacity Enhancement Project in Haiti, the Ministry of Agriculture of Natural Resources and Rural Development of Haiti intends to increase production capacity of rice seed in the North/North-East region up to 5,000 tons, with the expectation that the supply rate reaches 100 percent in order to enhance the production of rice in Haiti and increase incomes of Haitian farmers.

Project Objectives:

1. Establish a community seed bank system to achieve an annual yield goal of 5,000 tons of quality rice seed in 2021.
2. Establish the first seed laboratory in the north; guide the community seed banks to analyze and control seed quality.
3. Guide 20 farmers’ organizations to establish multi-service center to support regional seed bank and offer agricultural services to the region.
4. Enhance the capacity of agricultural machinery services and equip 45 power tillers, 50 wind blowers and 20 rice polishing machines. Train 23 technicians in repair and maintenance techniques and 45 operators in machinery operation techniques.

Technical Mission of The Republic of China(Taiwan) in the Republic of Haiti / Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development of Haiti

Current Progress:

To the end of  2022, the following activities have been completed:
1. Guided 20 farmers' organizations to produce 8,064.84 ton quality seed for 57,599 Ha rice production field for two cropping seasons per year.
2. Conducted 32 multi-service centers, seed inspection, registered seed production and machinery operation techniques training courses.
3. Guided 20 farmers' organizations to establish the multi-service centers and constructed 20 multi-service centers.
4. Completed 47 training courses for seed growers were completed, with a total of 1,238 participations.
5. Cooperated with Agrisud International to conduct research on the impact of climate change on agricultural production in Saint Raphael.
6. Six field observation activities were completed, with a total of 324 participants.
7. Set up a new seed examine laboratory and an Agricultural Machinery Parts Garage.
