Project Description:

The Aquaculture Project was implemented in Funafuti in 2011 in response to the requirements of the government of Tuvalu. A workstation has been established in Funafuti to assist in the cultivation and promotion of milkfish. The project will also aim to improve local fisheries and associated industries, and promote sustainable development.Overall, this project will:
1. Establish an aquaculture workstation on Funafuti Island.
2. Cooperate with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Land and Environment on operations, cultivation and demonstration activities; hold training courses on cultivation and perform demonstrations.
3. Produce a handbook on the management of fish ponds and associated technical guidance.
4. Build sufficient capacity in milkfish cultivation to transfer the project on to local counterparts.

Project Objectives:

1. Establish an aquaculture workstation on Funafuti Island to act as a center for cultivation and promotion.
2. Cooperate with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Land and Environment to demonstrate cultivation of 1,300 kg of milkfish.
3. Produce milkfish feed and use local resources to develop new feeds.
4. Promote education and the transfer of technology by holding training courses on milkfish cultivation for 130 persons per year.
5. Transfer the workstation to the Ministry of Natural Resources, Land and Environment.

Executing Agency:

Project Performance:

1. Constructed and installed facilities at the aquaculture workstation, including the installation of oxygen supply system and a station signboard, and the repair and refurbishment of electrical systems.
2. Produced 268.35 kg of milkfish.
3. Completed two aquaculture training workshops and a demonstration.
4. Held 100 hours of training courses on the management of fish pond and fish farms, and feed production.
