The 73rd session of the General Assembly of the United Nations opened on September 18, 2018 at the UN Headquarters in New York. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) held the seminar ‘Global Partnership for Sustainable Development: Best Practices in the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals’ on the same date to showcase how the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) has supported partners to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. Besides Secretary General of the TaiwanICDF Timothy T.Y Hsiang（項恬毅）, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection Administration（EPA）Shun-Kuei Chan（詹順貴）, Prime Minister Enele Sosene Sopoaga of Tuvalu, and permanent representative to the UN of the Marshall Islands Amatlain Elizabeth Kabua all attended the seminar.

Deputy Minister Chan presented a report of Taiwan’s implementation of the SDGs in key areas such as smart water management, circular economy, ecological conservation, and international collaboration.

Secretary General Hsiang recalled the UN Global Pulse initiative and drew attention to the TaiwanICDF’s efforts in building data for development. By supporting partner countries to build capacity for data-driven management, the TaiwanICDF ensures quality data and promotes ways for their usage throughout projects.

He gave examples of health and environmental projects. In health, he stated that data is the foundation for good policy making. It provides evidence for disease prevention and risk management and may be used to improve the efficiency of hospitals. In terms of the environment, data usage may enhance partner countries’ resilience and reduce the risk of disasters.

Prime Minister Sopoaga expressed his affirmation for Taiwan’s support to Tuvalu in facing climate change, especially the efforts of Taiwan Technical Mission to carry out work with the Tuvalu people. Ambassador Kabua stressed that no partnership should be left out, considering the SDGs commitment to ‘leave no one behind’, and including Taiwan’s participation in the international society would be beneficial.

Hundreds of participants were at the event, which is part of a series of activities held under the theme U.N. Global Goals—Taiwan Can Help.
