Project achievements of the TaiwanICDF highlighted at the International Agricultural Fair in Honduras

The biennial international agricultural fair in Honduras took place on May 17-18, 2018. It attracted a total of 558 visitors including international organizations, cooperatives and agricultural companies, and more than 1,200 buyers from 22 countries participated in the business meetings. The Taiwan Technical Mission in Honduras of the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) was invited to present the achievements of their projects, which are implemented in cooperation with the Honduran government. The projects include the Healthy Avocado Seedling Production Project, Healthy Seed Potato Production Project, Fonseca Net Cage Aquaculture Project, and Strengthening the Control of Huanglongbing (HLB) and the Implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in Citrus Project. The projects demonstrated Taiwan's soft power in agricultural technology and international cooperation.

The achievements of the projects were among the focus of the event, including the new commercial varieties of potato Puren-INIA and DICTA-JICARAMANI, which received a great deal of attention from farmers who were interested in buying. In addition, the avocado project attracted international organizations that promote family farming, such as the Hunger Free Latin America and the Caribbean Initiative Support Project of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Representatives of the project actively discussed with the resident TaiwanICDF staff on how to meet the needs of poor people by supplementing their diets with avocado. Also, some coffee farmers who suffered from declining sales inquired into the possibility of cultivating avocado instead of coffee. Besides, there were more than five supermarkets and fruit vendors that expressed willingness to cooperate with the avocado project beneficiaries. Meanwhile, many visitors were amazed not only by the sea-cage aquaculture methods of the aquaculture project but also Taiwan’s experience in the prevention and control of Huanglongbing.

For many years, the TaiwanICDF has assisted the Honduran government in developing local agriculture, making good use of Taiwan’s experience and technology in the country. In the future, the TaiwanICDF will continue to uphold the principle of mutual assistance for mutual benefit, to deepen the friendship with our partner countries and expand the links between Taiwan and the world through our various cooperation projects.
