TaiwanICDF helps create new value for taro in Palau

In line with the Palau government’s goal to promote taro as the main staple food, the TaiwanICDF dispatched Taiwanese experts to Palau to conduct food processing training in April, teaching local people to make taro-related products. It is hoped that boosting the economic value of taro will help revive the popularity of taro in Palau and increase the diversity of tourism products.

Taro has been a staple food in Palau. However, a shift toward a western diet and competition from cheaper imported foods have led to overproduction of taro in the country. To solve the problem of excessive production and encourage local consumption of taro, the Palau government has been trying to enhance the added value of taro by developing various taro-related products, aiming to re-establish taro as the main staple food of Palauans.

Responding to the requirement of the Palau government, the TaiwanICDF dispatched Taiwanese experts to Palau to provide training in processing taro into flour and making bread and ice cream with taro. A total of 50 people participated in the training workshops. In the workshops, participants learned how to produce cake, pizzas, pancakes, buns and ice cream by using automated equipment and related baking procedures. The TaiwanICDF hopes that improving the Palauans’s capacity to process taro and develop taro-derived products will increase local demand for taro as well as sales in the tourism industry.
