Achievements in the exchange of plant genetic resources between Taiwan and friendly countries

Collecting plant genetic resources is necessary for crop variety breeding and research. As such, the TaiwanICDF has intensified efforts to introduce plant genetic resources from abroad since 2017, hoping to assist agricultural experimental institutions in Taiwan to collect excellent plant varieties with unique characteristics through the worldwide network of the Taiwan Technical Missions. This year, six coffee varieties (Pacamara roja, Marsellesa, Parainema, Java, Catuai Rojo and Ihcafe 90) from Nicaragua and one yellow passion fruit variety from St. Lucia were successfully introduced into Taiwan.

The Tea Research and Extension Station, Council of Agriculture (COA), Executive Yuan wishes to import foreign coffee varieties to assist the Taiwan coffee industry in establishing genetic data for future breed improvement. In view of this, the Taiwan Technical Mission in Nicaragua through the Nicaraguan Agricultural Technology Institute (INTA) found a reliable coffee estate to successfully collect and export coffee seeds. For yellow passion fruit, the Taiwan Technical Mission in St. Lucia collected the seeds while they were providing guidance to the local farmers, to contribute to research conducted by the Taichung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station on the passion fruit collar rot and wilt diseases.

Under the impact of global warming, safeguarding the diversity of plant resources will be the key to confronting the challenges of climate change. The TaiwanICDF and Taiwan Technical Missions will continue to share Taiwan’s advanced agricultural technologies and cultivation experience with our friendly countries and contribute to our agricultural development through the exchange of plant genetic resources.
