Taipei, Taiwan -- The TaiwanICDF Healthcare Personnel Training Program drew to a close today in a ceremony at the Howard Plaza Hotel, attended by 41 graduating trainees from 17 countries, and supported by a number of foreign ambassadors and dignitaries, along with representatives of 19 host hospitals. Attendance for this year's eight-week program was boosted to a record high thanks to the participation of a trainee from Fiji, despite a lack of official diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

Over many years, the TaiwanICDF has dispatched numerous groups of doctors and specialists to provide medical assistance to developing partner countries. These groups have often noted a dearth of resources dedicated toward medical training and education, one consequence of which is that local medical professionals often need to study abroad to gain their qualifications, while also receiving few opportunities to pursue further studies following their return home. To deepen cooperation with partner countries in the health care sector, the TaiwanICDF responded by establishing the International Healthcare Cooperation Strategic Alliance (IHCSA) with 37 of Taiwan's leading hospitals and medical institutions, dispatching Mobile Medical Missions that offer free medical treatment, clinical training and technical exchanges. In addition, the TaiwanICDF has also organized the Healthcare Personnel Training Program since 2006, during which time 117 medical professionals from partner countries have studied in Taiwan.

This year, placements were available at 19 IHCSA member-hospitals, with training focusing on three disciplines: medical administration, biomedical engineering and laboratory medical science. The overall purpose of the program is to train students in clinical skills and their application, in order to create a pool of seed instructors within partner countries. By passing on the professional medical knowledge, skills and experience acquired while in Taiwan, graduates of the Healthcare Personnel Training Program will be able to develop and enhance the quality of human resources for health care at a local level in their home countries.
