TaiwanICDF Shares Medical Personnel, Expertise Via Healthcare Personnel Training Program

July 19, 2010

Taipei, Taiwan -- The TaiwanICDF Healthcare Personnel Training Program officially begins today and will run until September 10. During the program, 43 medical trainees hailing from 19 TaiwanICDF partner nations will take part in an eight-week course of clinical training at one of the TaiwanICDF's partner hospitals.

When offering medical services in developing partner countries over the years, TaiwanICDF specialists have observed that a severe lack of medical education resources persists at a local level. Not only must medical personnel travel abroad to receive adequate professional training, but also insufficient support and resources at home increases the difficulty of further study. To deepen collaboration in health care in partner countries, the TaiwanICDF operates the International Healthcare Cooperation Strategic Alliance (IHCSA) in cooperation with 37 Taiwanese medical institutions and hospitals. Together, the TaiwanICDF and IHCSA dispatch Mobile Medical Missions overseas to provide free clinics, clinical training and technical exchanges. As a complement to this overseas assistance, the Healthcare Personnel Training Program is organized annually, and brings health professionals from Taiwan's partner countries to Taiwan for a period of clinical training. This improves the quality of medical human resource and ultimately helps partner countries to realize their development objectives.

The TaiwanICDF has organized the Healthcare Personnel Training Program since 2006, during which time 117 medical professionals from partner countries have studied in Taiwan. The customized training courses offered under the 2010 program focus on the three disciplines of medical management, medical engineering and laboratory medical science, with 20 participating IHCSA member-hospitals and -medical institutions as follows: Tri-Service General Hospital, China Medical University Hospital, Chung Shan Medical University Hospital, Show Chwan Memorial Hospital, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, Chi Mei Medical Center, Mennonite Christian Hospital, Cheng Hsin Rehabilitation Medical Center, Mackay Memorial Hospital, Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital at Kaohsiung Medical University, Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Cathay General Hospital, E-Da Hospital, Changhua Christian Hospital, Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Taipei Medical University Hospital, Taipei Medical University Municipal Wan Fang Hospital, Taipei Medical University Shuang Ho Hospital, Cardinal Tien Hospital and Yuan's General Hospital.

The overall purpose of the program is to train students in clinical skills and their application. After participants have completed their course and returned home, it is expected that they will act as seed instructors by passing on the professional medical knowledge, skills and experience acquired while in Taiwan, thus developing and enhancing the quality of human resources for health care at a local level.
