TaiwanICDF aims to contribute Taiwanese private sector expertise through US$1 million, CABEI-administered fund for consultancy services

On December 14, Ambassador to the Republic of Honduras H.E. John C.C. Lai visited the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) in Tegucigalpa to attend a signing ceremony with the organization's Executive President, Nick Rischbieth Glöe. The ceremony saw Ambassador Lai endorse two bilateral agreements with CABEI on behalf of the TaiwanICDF: the TaiwanICDF Fund for Consulting Services and a Bilateral Secondment Agreement.

To boost development in Central America, the TaiwanICDF has now contributed US$1 million toward the establishment of the“TaiwanICDF Fund for Consulting Services, (Fund)”, whose resources will be overseen and administered by CABEI. The Fund will support the appointment of Taiwanese experts and specialists to consult on projects throughout the region, and offer business opportunities that would have a positive impact on Central American development.

Through the signing of separate covenant – the Bilateral Secondment Agreement – the TaiwanICDF and CABEI have also agreed to deepen cooperation by dispatching personnel to work at each others’ headquarters, in order to share facilitate the exchange of expertise between the two organizations.

As a key development organization in Central America, CABEI is responsible for assisting its member states address their high levels of indebtedness and promote sustainable development in the region. The Republic of China (Taiwan) has been a non-regional member of the organization since 1990, during which time it has contributed to a number of co-financing and technical assistance programs, and assisted private sector development in a number of partner countries.

In recent years, the TaiwanICDF and CABEI have cooperated on The “Regional SME Re-Lending Project”, the “SMME Re-lending Project”, and the “Special Fund for the Social Transformation of Central America”. The two organizations also established the Technological and Vocational Education and Training Student Loan Fund in 2008, allowing poorer students greater access to quality educational services.
