The Trainee Becomes the Teacher:TaiwanICDF Healthcare Personnel Training Program Closes Successfully

The TaiwanICDF-sponsored Healthcare Personnel Training Program drew to a close on September 25 in an event presided over by Deputy Secretary General Dr. Lee Pai-po. Present at the ceremony were 33 trainees from 19 countries, who were joined by representatives of 17 institutions from the Taiwan Nongovernmental Hospitals and Clinics Association. Ambassadors from Taiwan’s partner nations were also in attendance.

Exchanges such as the Healthcare Personnel Training Program form part of the TaiwanICDF’s wider bid to promote medical cooperation with its partner countries, which sees the organization work closely with Taiwanese hospitals and health care institutions under the collective banner of the International Healthcare Cooperation Strategic Alliance (IHCSA). While administering treatment and conducting clinical training through Mobile Medical Missions in Taiwan’s partner countries, IHCSA staff invite their overseas counterparts to visit Taiwan to take part in in-depth training programs. These trainees are able to work side-by-side with their mentors over a three-month period, gaining extensive knowledge of medical practices in Taiwan and building their professional experience. On returning home the trainee becomes the teacher, passing on his or her knowledge to colleagues, thereby improving local medical human resource and boosting the standard of care available to patients in Taiwan’s partner countries.

This year’s program included introductory talks by Chen Hsiao-ping, Vice President of the Bureau of National Health Insurance, and Professor Song-Lih Huang of the Institute of Public Health at National Yang Ming University. Covering the development of Taiwan’s health care system and it’s current status and practices, these lectures allowed trainees to adapt themselves to their new environment as smoothly as possible. The intake of 33 medical professionals – including specialist doctors, nurses, radiographers, laboratory technicians, medical engineers and medical administrators – were then seconded to 17 institutions participating under the IHCSA, bringing the total number of participants in the program to 117 since its launch in 2005.

Hospitals and health care institutions participating in the 2009 Healthcare Personnel Training Program: Tri-Service General Hospital, China Medical University Hospital, Chung Shan Medical University Hospital, Show Chwan Memorial Hospital, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, Chi Mei Medical Center, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Cheng Hsin General Hospital, Mackay Memorial Hospital, Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital, Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Cathay General Hospital, E-Da Hospital, Changhua Christian Hospital, Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Taipei Medical University Hospital, and Taipei Medical University Municipal Wan Fang Hospital.
