Medical Mission to Papua New Guinea Forges Medical Ties

From August 16 to September 1, 2006, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) operated a Mobile Medical Mission providing free medical treatment and training to the local populace of Papua New Guinea. This was just one of the several missions commissioned by MOFA following a previous visit to the Marshall Islands, Kiribati and Fiji as part of a project to assist Taiwan's diplomatic allies in the South Pacific region. The TaiwanICDF has joined forces with the School of Medicine of National Yang-Ming University, the Taipei Veterans General Hospital and the Changhua Christian Hospital to support medical personnel exchanges in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, and the city of Wewak.

National Yang-Ming University's School of Medicine and the Changhua Christian Hospital had previously formed a sister hospital relationship with Papua New Guinea's Capital Hospital and Wewak Hospital. In order to strengthen the cooperation and exchanges between the two countries, this Mobile Medical Mission emphasized the training of medical personnel and provided free clinic services. National Yang-Ming University's School of Medicine has also been conducting research on tropical medicine to assist in related disease prevention and treatment.

Dr. Chen Chi-Fu of the TaiwanICDF's Technical Cooperation Department served as the chief of this Mobile Medical Mission to Papua New Guinea and the rest of the mission members were selected according to Papua New Guinea's medical needs. They assisted the local population by providing professional expertise and care.
