TaiwanICDF Mobile Medical Mission in Palau

As Taiwan's Father's Day approaches, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF), in conjunction with Taipei Municipal Wan-Fang Hospital, will send its Mobile Medical Mission to Palau for a nine-day exchange of medical techniques and experiences starting on August 8th, 2006.

The Mobile Medical Mission to Palau consists of twelve physicians led by Dr. Chiu Wen-ta, the president of the Taiwan Nongovernmental Hospitals & Clinics Association and superintendent of Wan-Fang Hospital. Dr. Chen Chi-fu of the TaiwanICDF's Technical Cooperation Department, who has over 10 years of medical experience in Africa, will serve as the chief of the medical team. The Mobile Medical Mission staff members come from a variety of backgrounds in fields where Palau seeks certain expertise: gastro-enterology, inhalation therapy, occupational therapy, dentistry, respiratory therapy, physical therapy and emergency care. Our members will work with the Belau National Hospital in Palau and participate in an exchange of professional knowledge.

Before the onset of the mission to Palau, the TaiwanICDF had already completed Medical Missions to several South Pacific nations commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the cooperation of some of Taiwan's hospitals. The Medical Mission traveled to the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Kiribati and the Republic of the Fiji Islands to promote international medical cooperation. In addition to supplying medical care for the local populations, the TaiwanICDF also conducted clinical training and technical exchanges for the local medical personnel.

The TaiwanICDF will attend the 11th annual "Pacific Rim Allied Economic Organization Conference" in Palau from August 9th to 11th, to share our experience in public health as well as the means by which Taiwan dealt with SARS. Our Mobile Medical Missions stand to continue to gain in-depth understandings of the direction of future medical services through the medical care, public health education and humanitarian services it is involved in around the globe.
