The ICDF is pleased to announce that Section IV of the Southern Highway Upgrading Project in Belize was officially inaugurated in late September during a ceremony in the Latin American country.

On hand to participate in the opening ceremony were the Ambassador of the Republic of China to Belize, H.E. Charles Tsai, and Secretary General of the ICDF, Yang Tzu-pao.

Both Ambassador Tsai and Dr.Yang reiterated Taiwan's continuing support of and friendship with Belize, expressing that Section IV of Southern Highway is a symbol of the sustainable friendship between Belize and Taiwan. Dr. Yang stated that the project will achieve sustainability in Belize by helping foster economic growth, public service improvements, and eco-tourism growth. He also indicated that this was the first time that the ICDF has co-financed a large project with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The Belizian Minister of Works, the Honorable Vildo Marin, unveiled a plaque and gave a brief address at the ceremony. Minister Marin, in his address, stated that the entire highway will help make the south of Belize unforgettable.

''It is a vision of the Government of Belize to extend this highway to the border with Guatemala. Our development cannot wait. We must invest today in order to reap the benefits in the future,''he told the audience.

Other speakers at the inauguration included Area Representative, Hon. Dr. Henry Canton; IDB Representative in Belize, Mr. Hugo Souza; and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Elizabeth Zabaneh.
