Project Description：

In order to promote diversification of aquaculture development, authorities in Santa Elena proposed this project establishing breeding area to cultivate local shellfish, fish and crustaceans, specifically aimed to oyster, whose fry is not easy to obtain.
National Aquaculture and Marine Research Center (CENAIM), which is affiliated to the college of Litoral Polytechnic College (Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral, ESPOL), is the only institute possessing oyster fry cultivation capacity, although its production capacity and techniques need to improve. Progressively, the industry will take shape by tutoring piscatory including technique training, post-harvest treatment demonstration and marketing activities.

Project Objectives：

1. Establish an oyster cultivation center in El Real.
2. Implement oyster cultivation test to improve production effectiveness.
3. Strengthen the capacity of oyster cultivation.
4. Assist piscatory organization promoting oyster cultivation.

Current Progress：

To the end of Novenber 2020, the following activities have been completed： Complete survey and interviews between San Ignacio and Santa Elena from October 2019.

1. Signed the project agreement and opened a project bank account.
2. Completed inviting ten piscatory organizations to participate in this project.
3. Completed building oyster cultivation laboratory.
4. Completed holding 8 basic oyster cultivation training and 2 advanced oyster cultivation training.
5. Send 2 times of short-term specialists for technical guidance
6. Completed building algae laboratory.
7. Bred 36.77 million oyster fry.
8. Stocked 6.45 million oyster fries.
9. Harvested 593,000 oysters.
