Project Name:Improvement of Solid Waste Management for Host Communities and Syrian Refugees in Azraq Town Project(Jordan)

Project Description:

Since the civil war broke out in Syria in 2011, Jordan has housed more than 650,000 Syrian refugees. The expanding population of refugees in Jordan has increased the amount of solid waste generated and exacerbated the problem of their disposal in Azraq Town, one of the important water sources in Jordan. This project aims to assist Azraq Town in improving solid waste management and the basic living conditions of the vulnerable locals and Syrian refugees.
Overall, this project:
1. The nature of and the structure of the waste sector and its value chains were studied and understood.
2. Cooperatives supported solid waste and composting services for Azraq Municipality and created local jobs to Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanians.
3. The technical and managerial capacities of sector actors were strengthened.
4. A sorting and composting unit was wet up.
5. Information and awareness raising information and campaigns were carried out among key actors and the general population.

Executing Agency:Action Against Hunger Jordan

Implementation Arrangement:The TaiwanICDF dispatched a volunteer per year during the two-year period to assist in the implementation of the project; Action Against Hunger Jordan implemented the proposed activities and liaised with local government offices and stakeholders.
