Project Name:Solar PV Mini-Grid System for Lighting in Myanmar Rural Areas

Project Description:

This technical assistance (TA) project aims to improve rural electrification in the target villages through the installation of mini-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and lighting appliance, and the capacity strengthening of rural communities to manage the installed systems.

Project components include: (i) Pilot installation of solar PV systems and lighting appliance on two sites (one is in Magway Region, the other is in Sagaing Region), supplying electricity in 5 villages; (ii) Capacity building and community engagement to manage the solar PV systems, including the establishment of user-pay model; and (iii) Development of a financially viable operating model and suitable financing mechanisms for extending rural solar PV mini-grid systems, following verification of system performance and business (user-pay) model.

Implementation Start Date:2016-01-29

Implementation End Date:2018-03-15

Project Objectives:Improve capacity and commitment within the target villages to manage the rural energy access projects using solar PV systems.

Executing Agency:Department of Rural Development (DRD), Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, Myanmar.

Implementation Arrangement:Funding resources: TaiwanICDF and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Republic of China (Taiwan). The TaiwanICDF is responsible for the management of the funds.

The TaiwanICDF is responsible for the procurement, shipping, and installation of the solar PV systems and lighting appliance. DRD is responsible for (i) recruiting and contracting consultants for providing consulting services in capacity building, verification and operating model development; (ii) local pick-up and transportation of shipped goods from port to the target villages; and (iii) coordination of villagers engaged in system installation and management.
