Project Name:Green Energy Special Fund (GESF)-Subproject 2: Jordan GAM Solid Waste Project
Project status:Completed projects
Cooperating Country:West and Central Asia, Jordan
Project Description:
The TaiwanICDF engaged in co-financing with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to finance a landfill gas (LFG) recovery system at the Al Ghabawi solid waste landfill facility in Amman. The electricity produced from landfill gas was delivered to the national grid, reducing Jordan's reliance on imported fuel oil and CO2 emissions.

Implementation Start Date:2015-05-15
Implementation End Date:2019-05-30
Project Objectives:
The population of the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) was expected to double by 2025 due to high population growth and rapid refugee influx, increasing stress on the provision of already strained solid waste services. Jordan faced a major challenge to modernize its solid waste management. Waste separation and recycling were limited while burning waste was a common way of disposal. The gas collection technology introduced by the project was new to Jordan, and had served as an example for other landfill areas in the country. The landfill gas-generated power has been connected to the national grid, helping the country reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuel, while also preserving the environment by reducing CO2 emissions by 150,000 tons annually.
Executing Agency:Greater Amman Municipality (GAM)
Implementation Arrangement:
The TaiwanICDF, through its contribution to the GESF, cofinanced the Project with the EBRD by providing a loan to the GAM, who provides a counterpart contribution to the Project.
