Given the extent to which ICT can enhance the government sector, information security has become an important topic of concern for many countries. As such, one of the components of the TaiwanICDF’s ICT Technical Cooperation Project in St. Lucia has involved drawing on Taiwan’s information security management technology and capacity in consultancy and guidance to assist the Computer Centre Ltd., a St. Lucian government corporation, in safeguarding the privacy, integrity and usability of information systems and networks, leading to the acquisition of ISO 27001 standards for information security management systems.

In recent years, the TaiwanICDF’s assistance work has emphasized the integration of resources based on Taiwan’s comparative advantages. As part of this project, for example, the TaiwanICDF has invited Taiwanese vendors to assist the Computer Centre in conducting an intensive internal review, as well as to provide detailed education and training, and to complete improvements to information security management systems and four-tier file information security, ensuring that the St. Lucian government’s ICT operations take place within a safe and secure information environment.

On April 13, the efforts of the vendors enlisted by the TaiwanICDF and of St. Lucia over the past year were rewarded when the Computer Centre’s information security management systems were endorsed following an external audit by Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) Taiwan. According to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) statistics, this makes the unit the first institution in St. Lucia to have passed a verified ISO 27001 audit, and the first to have received associated certification, demonstrating the significant results of Taiwan’s assistance in the area of ICT.
