Patrick Muir, principal secretary at Swaziland’s Ministry of Education and Training, is due to lead a five-member delegation to Taiwan from March 29 to April 3, to inspect the development and status of Taiwan’s technical and vocational education and training (TVET) affairs.

In recent years, the Swazi government has joined forces to promote national industrial restructuring, hoping to shift momentum from the agricultural sector toward the development of industry and commerce.

To assist Swaziland in resolving a shortage of human resources as it undergoes this process, the TaiwanICDF and Swazi authorities are now planning to implement the Vocational Education and Training Enhancement Project in Swaziland, which, through the strengthening of the country’s existing TVET system, will assist in cultivating the medium- to high-level ICT technicians needed for economic planning and development, and high-level personnel specializing in electrical and mechanical control systems as needed for industrial development. The project will also make use of intensive, short-term vocational training courses, providing the rapid training needed to produce qualified technicians capable of carrying out industrial wiring in low- and high-voltage settings, and automobile repair and maintenance personnel, so that TVET in Swaziland becomes more effective in meeting the country’s industrial development needs, and achieves the objective of upgrading the nation’s skills.

During its time in Taiwan, the Swazi delegation will call on units including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, the Workforce Development Agency and its Taichung-Changhua-Nantou Regional Branch, National Chin-Yi University of Technology and the Taiwan Assessment and Evaluation Association, to learn about the development of TVET-related policies in Taiwan, the development and evolution of TVET evaluation systems, industrial-academic cooperation and training, and the operation of innovation incubation centers. The delegation will also hope to gain an understanding of the overall direction and objectives of the future implementation of the bilateral Vocational Education and Training Enhancement Project, to serve as a reference when developing future TVET-related policy in Swaziland.
