Project Name:Livestock Project (Marshall Islands)

Project status:Completed projects

Cooperating Country:Asia-Pacific, Marshall Islands

Project Description:On many of the Marshall Islands’ outer islands, access to imported food is more difficult because of transport issues and cost, and there is also a lack of power and facilities to preserve food. Food surveys on outer islands indicate that more than 80 percent of households rely on local protein sources, which is much higher than in Majuro (22 percent). Pigs can be fed with copra, sweet potato leaves, banana, breadfruit and leftovers. The sustainable management of pig farms therefore remains vitally important both for providing a source of protein-based nutrition on outer islands and for increasing household income. This project will be critical in addressing food security and sustainable livelihoods by initiating household livestock production, providing one male and one female piglet to every household on outer islands. The main content of the project will include: 1.The breeding of 6,000 piglets. 2.Introducing frozen semen to improve pig varieties four times. 3.Providing on-farm demonstrations of improved pig raising techniques and training for outer island farmers.

2.Improve health and food consumption through the increased local production of pork, benefitting an estimated total of 14,000 people.
