Project Description：On many of the Marshall Islands’ outer islands, access to imported food is more difficult because of transport issues and cost, and there is also a lack of power and facilities to preserve food. Food surveys on outer islands indicate that more than 80 percent of households rely on local protein sources, which is much higher than in Majuro (22 percent). Pigs can be fed with copra, sweet potato leaves, banana, breadfruit and leftovers. The sustainable management of pig farms therefore remains vitally important both for providing a source of protein-based nutrition on outer islands and for increasing household income. This project will be critical in addressing food security and sustainable livelihoods by initiating household livestock production, providing one male and one female piglet to every household on outer islands. The main content of the project will include: 1.The breeding of 6,000 piglets. 2.Introducing frozen semen to improve pig varieties four times. 3.Providing on-farm demonstrations of improved pig raising techniques and training for outer island farmers.

Project Objectives：1.Construct a new pig house, including a wastewater treatment system, in the Laura area.
2.Breed 6,000 piglets.
3.Introduce frozen semen four times.
4.Provide on-farm demonstrations of improved pig raising techniques and training for outer island farmers.
5.Produce five pig pen management skills handbooks.
6.Provide 11 training workshops.

Current Progress：To the end of December, 2020, the following activities have been completed:
1. Bred 6,695 piglets.
2. Held pig raising management 11 workshops on outer atolls.
3. Assisted the farmers of Ailinglaplap, Arno, Ebon, Kili, Maloelap, Jabot, Likiep, Namu, Wotje, Jaluit and Kwajalein atolls' in raising pigs.
4. Held 24 livestock project meetings.
5. Produced three feed formulae, including piglet pre-weaning feed, nursery pig feed and lactation feed.
6. Produced three sets of standard operating procedures on feed formulae for piglet pre-weaning feed, nursery pig feed and lactation feed, respectively.
7. Produced one local feed efficiency experiment report.

Projected Benefits：It is expected that the project will:
1.Enable vulnerable households to rear their own supply of pigs, sufficient to meet households’ dietary needs, and thereby reduce reliance on more costly, imported foods.
2.Improve health and food consumption through the increased local production of pork, benefitting an estimated total of 14,000 people.
