Project Name:Well Rehabilitation in Host Communities (Northern Jordan)

Project status:Completed projects

Cooperating Country:West and Central Asia, Jordan

Project Description:

This project rehabilitates and/or upgrade existing water wells in Mafraq and Irbid governorates that had been constructed by the Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) and managed by Yarmouk Water Company (YWC) over the last two decades. These wells have not been utilized or been underutilized due to the lack of funding and equipment, and issues with water availability and quality. YWC responsible for water provision in northern Jordan is facing serious water shortage this summer, as the number of Syrian refugees living in host communities has considerably increased over the last years. The rehabilitation of the existing wells provides a fast and low cost solution for improved supply of safe water in northern Jordan. In cooperation with WAJ and YWC Mercy Corps identify and assess ten wells and make them operational through a range of interventions that may include but are not limited to re-drilling, rehabilitation of casing, installing pumps and piping, upgrading treatment facilities, etc.
The project included following activities:
1. Two underutilized wells are assessed and engineering solutions are developed.
2. Two wells are operational following the rehabilitation and upgrade.
3. Quality of water meets the standards of the Water Authority of Jordan/ Yarmouk Water Company.
