TaiwanICDF Holds Fall 2014 Pre-service Training Program for Long-term Overseas Volunteers

The TaiwanICDF held its Fall 2014 Pre-service Training Program for Long-term Overseas Volunteers from September 10 to 16, with a total of 12 volunteers having been selected to participate after qualifying by exam. After completing the program and passing a further exam the volunteers will be dispatched to serve in Taiwan’s partner countries in the future. The curriculum of the training program covered concepts such as Taiwan’s current foreign aid policy, the present status of the TaiwanICDF and its key operations, trends in international volunteering and the work of volunteers dispatched overseas, and the practical concerns and ethical considerations of volunteer service.

To allow the volunteers to understand and simulate in advance the uncertainties and challenges that they may face during their periods of service, courses on security management and social practices were also arranged as part of the program.

For the social practices component, the candidate volunteers visited Dahu Elementary School in Hsinchu to take part in a range of shared activities on campus. This allowed the group to share an international perspective and discuss the benefits of public service with Taiwanese children, conveying to these young students a public-spirited attitude of compassion and concern. In order to increase the depth of the course, to integrate the TaiwanICDF’s resources and to provide opportunities for volunteers to plan and execute activities alongside others, the TaiwanICDF also invited overseas scholarship students from its International Higher Education Scholarship Program to work with the volunteers in designing and implementing the day’s activities.
